How the Visma Security Program strengthens cybersecurity in the public sector
As technology continues to advance and shape our world, the cyber threat landscape is evolving alongside it. While cyber criminals are becoming increasingly sophisticated, the technology powering our institutions and public services is also progressing every day. And at Visma, we’re fully equipped and committed to helping public organisations stay ahead of these challenges.
Modern societies rely so heavily on digital networks that cyber attacks can pose significant threats to a nation’s well-being, with the potential to disrupt anything from electricity grids and water supplies to hospital and emergency services – and the very core of public administration. These attacks are not just inconvenient; they have the ability to cause widespread chaos and endanger lives.
As a provider of SaaS software for public administrations across Europe, we recognise our role in safeguarding societies as a whole. That is why we have implemented industry-leading security measures, ensuring that the public sector entities supported by our products can serve citizens securely.
As the frequency and sophistication of cyber threats continue to rise, Kasper Lyhr, Public Sector Director at Visma, urges European organisations to make cybersecurity a top priority.
"In today’s rapidly evolving digital environment, protecting sensitive data and critical infrastructure is crucial. Cybersecurity must be a top priority for every public sector organisation to reduce risks and ensure the public’s safety."
– Kasper Lyhr, Public Sector Director
It’s not a matter of if something happens, but when
Given the vast amounts of sensitive data they hold, and the critical infrastructure under their guard, public institutions are undeniably prime targets for cybercriminals.
"Attacking national data centres is modern warfare; it’s cyber warfare. And these attacks have the potential to cripple economies, destabilise governments, and trigger national security emergencies.”
– Espen Johansen, Chief Security Officer at Visma
The question is no longer whether a cyber attack will occur, but when. So, by using a structured approach to cybersecurity, we’re constantly working to improve the safety of our products, minimise risks, and ensure resilience against cyber attacks. We also collaborate closely with local governments to unveil and address the threats they face.
Cindy Wubben, Chief Information Security Officer (CISO) for the Public Sector at Visma, emphasises the importance of maintaining the highest security standards in the public sector, as these institutions are responsible for safeguarding citizens' private data.
"At Visma, we are committed to supporting public administrations with secure and reliable digital solutions, to help protect sensitive data and keep essential public services running smoothly.”
– Cindy Wubben, CISO for the Public Sector
The Visma Security Program
Part of our commitment and approach to upholding the highest standards of security is our comprehensive Visma Security Program, a risk-based initiative that combines training, guidance, and advanced security services to protect our software products and customer data from cyber threats. The program ensures that security measures are constantly up-to-date and tailored to the specific needs of each Visma company. It also helps facilitate the process for each Visma company to declare compliance with required standards and regulations, including the NIS2 Directive.
We have a variety of security measures in place that both meet and exceed these requirements:
- Actively measuring the gap between current security levels and desired standards, developing risk management strategies that include actionable steps. These steps include fixing critical vulnerabilities and patching servers, focusing on risk management and incident response.
- Maintaining dedicated 24/7 security operations for monitoring, detecting, preventing, and managing incidents. The Visma Cyber Crime Centre (VC3) specifically works to prevent cyber crime, ensuring strong security across the entire organisation.
- Tracking targeted security levels versus actual performance in real time through our Security Maturity Index. It serves as a tool for management to set KPIs and make strategic security decisions, promoting transparency and accountability.
- Ensuring continuous learning and improvement through the Visma Security Program and its recurring actions and initiatives.
Our approach to cybersecurity is constantly evolving and adapting – not only to meet the requirements of local regulations and industry standards, but to exceed them. Customer safety is our top priority, and we take great pride in delivering innovative products that are secure and sustainable. As legislative changes unfold, you can always rest assured that Visma is ready and well-prepared.
